Disclaimer
It is very difficult to know exactly what happens to a dog in a vehicle crash since the testing tools available in the industry are very limited. In our opinion, a dog that is harnessed reduces that chance of the pet being injured by hitting other objects or occupants in the vehicle. It should also protect a dog from injuries associated with sudden stops and starts.
Measuring your dog for a dog seat belt:
Measure (A) The distance around the dog's middle and (B) the distance around the dog's chest. Use the chart below to determine the best size.
For Smaller Dogs, Our Safety Seat Support Harness is fleece-lined for comfort. It restrains your dog comfortably during car trips. The harness attaches easily to a seatbelt and can be just as easily adapted to the leash for walks.

Story: Get a dog seat belt for your pet NOW!Posted By: M. 'NorthWolf' Brown

This weekend my 12 year old collie survived being thrown from my vehicle in a pretty nasty car crash.
Neither I, nor my passenger, nor the people in the other car were hurt...we all walked away without injury. But my dog, who was riding in the cargo area of my Subaru Outback, was thrown many yards from the vehicle through one of the side windows.
My vehicle was broadsided on the right rear wheel by an SUV going 40+ mph and the impact spun my vehicle several times, essentially doing 'crack the whip' and flinging my dog's body out through the side window.
I can't describe the horror of helplessly spinning around and around and seeing my dog actually flying out onto the road.
I don't know HOW she lived. It really is a miracle that she suffered no internal bleeding or fractures...only a moderate brachial plexus injury that looks like it might eventually heal with no need for amputation. I think our guardian angels were riding shotgun that day.
However my dog is in a lot pf pain and distress and it hurts terribly to know that it all could have been avoided if I'd buckled her up with a safety harness.
I urge EVERYONE with pets to invest in safety harnesses. Use them for EVERY car ride, EVERY time...no matter how short the trip or where you're driving!
I was only driving to a neighborhood a few blocks away to walk my dog when this happened. Now we don't know if she'll ever walk again. If you're worried about the cost of quality harnesses...well, $60-$70 dollars is NOTHING compared to the $650 in vet bills I am paying, not to mention the pain of seeing my best friend suffer because of my mistake.
I'm going to invest in a safety harness for my dog and I urge every pet owner to do the same. There's simply no reason not to.
And no, I'm not being paid to write this. If you have any doubts, contact me through e-mail and I'll show you pictures of the car and the dog! Please pass this on to all your pet-owning friends! Safety harnesses for dogs save lives!
